A recognized geoscience leader, CGG is committed to innovation in seismic acquisition, processing, reservoir characterization and modelling and is making these tools increasingly valuable to geophysicists and reservoir engineers. A key concern in reservoir characterization is retaining micrometer information from core analysis when scaling up to the ten meter seismic in a field measured in square kilometers. Petrophysics serves as the essential link. Core information comprises a detailed fine scale description which leads to a facies description and very modern, automated, detailed mineralogy.
Detailed mineralogy enhances the Formation Description Log for the best possible geology-driven answers. The facies description and core measurements such as porosity, permeability and capillary pressures are incorporated into a Reservoir Rock Types analysis. The net result is an interpretation of the lithology, porosity and fluids linked back to the core but now on a scale approaching that of the seismic.
Each Reservoir Rock Type has a set of reservoir parameters: porosity, permeability, fluids and facies. Linking this to, for example, the P-Impedance extracted from a seismic inversion connects these properties to the reservoir scale of the seismic.
The use of well logs combined with core analysis reveals the Reservoir Rock Type. Formation Description Logs from other wells in the field enable the extrapolation of the Reservoir Rock Type across the field. This enables a more accurate map of the facies and a clearer understanding of rock porosity and permeability across the field.
By enhancing and validating the Reservoir Characterization and Model, Petrophysics helps drive more informed decisions on locations of wells and injectors.
Volumes of data are produced from wells on a daily basis, beginning with initial drilling and continuing throughout the production lifetime. Today this information is captured and stored in digital format. But on many older wells, this information is often available only in paper reports and documents.
CGG is expert at retrieving this data and presenting it in a form and format that can be used within reservoir characterization, models and other interpretation tools.
Formation Description Logs are created to show lithology, porosity and fluids. The well is zoned into relevant geological formations and each zone is carefully analysed using all available data, log, core, cuttings, and fluid information. Environmental corrections are also done to yield the best possible data.

Traditionally, core analysis has been confined to a physical study of the core sample. Variation in description and lack of actual data can inhibit use of the core analysis in the decision making process.
Automated mineralogy produces data that can be included in reservoir characterization and models. A Scanning Electron Microscope apparatus provides digital imaging, mineralogical and petrological analysis to reveal the mineralogy and associated lithological properties of rock samples. The data can be used to validate the rock types in combination with well logs.
The system delivers detailed petrographic-style analysis of drill cuttings and core samples on a quantitative point basis. This analysis provides data on rock properties such as matrix density, clay type, grain size and porosity. A key advantage is that the material is not destroyed and can be used in future analyses. A data set that gives a clear analysis of the core sample in digital format can then be included in the reservoir characterization and model.
Seismic data reveals a picture of the subsurface, and petrophysical data allows us to touch the subsurface. Combining these two elements improves our understanding of the reservoir. With the addition of petrophysical data, CGG offers the ability to create a complete reservoir model, or enhance an existing one. Regardless of the age of the well and the condition or format of the data, CGG has the tools, expertise and experience to consistently produce invaluable information that saves time and money while reducing E&P risk.
