CGG’s state-of-the-art lab based automated mineralogical (Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy) instrument provides nano-metre scale digital imaging, and micron resolution digital petrographic analysis.

This flagship instrument combines a Field Emission Gun (FEG) SEM with EDS providing a non-destructive analysis from a range of widely available clean or contaminated rock samples - including cuttingsM, core pieces/plugs or plug trims, hand specimens, polished thin sections and slabbed core.

This powerful automated system is augmented by an extensive mineral dictionary developed through our vast global experience. The outputs are enhanced by CGG’s unique automated mineralogy workflows developed from our vast well database of analyses. Our team of expert geoscientists and technicians have experience in conventional, siliciclastic, carbonate and unconventional resource plays worldwide.

Detailed Quantitative Analysis

Our analyses provide a fully quantitative mineralogical and textural data set that power our key reservoir workflows, most notably:

  • Automatic generation and assignment of user modifiable lithotypes provides a powerful tool for the analysis and characterisation of cuttings or core samples.
  • High resolution analysis provides data such as volume, shape, orientation and size distribution of pores.
  • Heavy mineral analyses for sediment provenance evaluation and discrimination of igneous and metamorphic lithologies.
  • Highly detailed grain analyses which include grain size, shape and long axis orientation used in conjunction with our Core Magnetics analyses.
  • Comprehensive chemical and mineralogical characterization of lithologies to provide stratigraphic subdivisions for correlation of stratigraphic surfaces.
  • Valuable ‘real rock ‘measured mineralogical and textural data, generating inputs for petrophysical modelling constraints. Such data include rock measured matrix density curves, clay speciation and volumes, textural inputs such as cementation factor, grain contacts, roundness and pore aspect ratio.
