The fold and thrust belt of the external Hellenides in western Greece comprises sedimentary
successions of Mesozoic carbonates and Cenozoic clastics with source and reservoir
potential. Faulted anticlinal trap structures associated with the Cenozoic collision of the
Apulian (African) and Eurasian plates complete the petroleum system. Thus, the regional
geology provides an overview of petroleum systems, demonstrating important aspects of
the relationships between tectonics, sea level and stratigraphy.
