The rolling moorlands of the south eastern Peak District in central England exhibit a
succession of Viséan shelf, reef and lagoonal carbonate lithologies that have been subject
to significant quarrying, providing extensive exposures of limestone cyclothems. The cyclic
nature of the succession, which formed in Equatorial conditions, illustrates how sequence
stratigraphy can be applied to carbonate systems and the dominance of eustatic sea level
variation as a control on sedimentary deposition.
This field trip can also be delivered in conjunction with our courses on Carbonate Reservoir
