We were the first geoscience service provider to introduce QEMSCAN® technology for the oil and gas industry in 2007, and developed the world’s first wellsite portable version, RoqScan™ in 2010. Our extensive mineralogy experience covers the majority of conventional and unconventional resource plays around the world.

QEMSCAN

QEMSCAN (Quantitative Evaluation of Minerals by Scanning Electron Microscopy) is a rapid, reliable and quantitative analytical method used to obtain comprehensive chemical, mineralogical and textural datasets from cuttings, core, SWC, thin sections and slabbed core.

Our dedicated team of specialists use QEMSCAN to obtain the maximum amount of information from your rock samples, which includes the following:

QEMSCAN data has been an indispensable tool for our clients’ oil and gas exploration projects, chiefly assisting:

  • Reservoir quality and diagenetic assessment
  • Provenance assessment
  • Stratigraphic subdivision coupled with sequence stratigraphy and biostratigraphy
  • Multi-well stratigraphic correlation
  • Petrophysical log calibration

How does it work? QEMSCAN combines a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and two powerful Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) detectors to analyse and capture quantitative geochemistry data rapidly. Similar to traditional optical petrography point counting, the system systematically point counts across the sample surface at the assigned scanning resolution. This process collects 1000 EDS counts per pixel which are then characterized against our proprietary mineralogical database. The results from this analysis process generates the volume percent of the identified mineralogical volumes and a false color mineral map. These maps are then used to quantify of the sample and to interpret textural information.

Analysis can be conducted at any resolution from 1µm, with standard workflow resolutions of 75µm, 50µm and 10µm. The images above show a 1cm x 1cm sample imaged at the different resolutions. Lower resolution analysis (75µm and 50µm) generates detailed mineralogical data quickly. Higher resolution analysis (10µm or less) allows the capture of information on mineral associations, grain size distribution and porosity.


RoqScan

RoqScan is our exclusive portable mineral analysis system designed for wellsite, core store and off-site analysis. The RoqScan system provides quantitative mineralogical and textural analysis at the source of sample acquisition.

A key benefit is achieving real-time data from ditch cuttings at the wellsite. RoqScan data has allowed our clients to make key decisions quickly, on challenges such as improved well management, improved lateral drilling, tactical positioning of fractures, and validation of petrophysical interpretations.
