CGG GeoSoftware Donates Full Software Suite to Heriot-Watt’s Petroleum Learning Centre in Russia

Paris, France | Jul 20, 2017

CGG GeoSoftware has donated a full suite of its software technologies to the Petroleum Learning Centre, a joint educational project of Tomsk Polytechnic University in Russia and Heriot-Watt University in Scotland. The donation includes training licenses for each of the software solutions (HampsonRussell, Jason®, PowerLog, EarthModel FT, InsightEarth® and VelPro) in its product portfolio.

Based in Tomsk, Siberia, the Petroleum Learning Centre was established by Tomsk Polytechnic University and the Institute of Petroleum Engineering at Heriot-Watt University in 2001 to train qualified professionals to work in today’s oil and gas industry. Graduates of the Centre receive two diplomas, one from the Russian University and one from the British University.

The Petroleum Learning Centre runs two MSc degree courses, one in Petroleum Engineering and one in Reservoir Evaluation and Management. A large part of both programs is devoted to individual and group reservoir modeling projects using real data. The software donation will enable students to gain hands-on experience of conducting practical projects with real field data using industry-leading software.

Vitaliy Pavlovich Merkulov, Head of the Oil and Gas Facilities Design Department, Petroleum Learning Centre, said: "CGG GeoSoftware solutions will help our students master the latest technologies in seismic interpretation, prepare high-quality group and individual projects, and expand the abilities of our students, researchers and professors alike for scientific work. Our graduate students and young scientists need to be able to explore the capabilities of the latest software to implement their ideas and develop their potential.”

Yuriy Smirnov, CIS Regional Manager, CGG GeoSoftware, said: "We are keen to support universities in their aspirations to train knowledgeable and skilled graduates so that they become fully-fledged geologists and geophysicists. Combining theory and practice is the best way for a graduate to make a smooth transition from university to a professional working environment. This background gives graduates an excellent start for their future career paths in the oil and gas industry.”

CGG GeoSoftware has been donating its HampsonRussell software for research and training purposes since 1987 and over 129 universities and colleges now participate worldwide.
